3 comedians who can sing (and we mean really sing)

All musical comedians are, generally speaking (although not always), pretty musical. It goes with the territory.

But some of the most musically gifted comedians are not the ones who you would typically see brandishing a guitar or sat at the piano as part of their act.

More on this topic: Is musical comedy going to die out?

In fact, there are quite a few stand-ups and comedy actors who have kept their singing ability pretty much hidden away. If you saw their acts, you’d never know they could belt it out with the best of them.

Take, for example…

Alexander Armstrong

Pointless presenter, one half of sketch act Armstrong and Miller, and yes, singer extraordinaire. Here he is singing London Pride (rather than drinking it) at the VE Day 70 concert, Horse Guards Parade London, in May 2015. He’s got his debut album, A Year of Songs, out, this year too.

Jason Manford

One of the biggest names in UK stand-up, panel show regular, former 8 out of 10 Cats team captain and…opera singer. Jason Manord triumphed with his opera performances on the ITV celebrity talent show, Born to Shine, as this clip demonstrates.

Sheridan Smith

Okay, so Sheridan Smith might not be a comedian in the “gigging stand-up” sense of the word, but she is well known for her roles in comedies including Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, Gavin and Stacy, and Benidorm.

She has starred in West End productions of Little Shop of Horrors and Legally Blonde (for which she won an Olvier Award) among others, and was watched by millions playing (and singing as) Cilla Black in the TV drama Cilla. So not such a surprise maybe, but still a comic actor with a cracking voice.
